BLOG 11 - Global Events

In our first blog back from Spring Break, you are to create your own blog topic (about relevant, appropriate, and current worldwide events).

You are to search BBC, CNN, the Kansas City Star, local news stations, the NYT, etc for a significant event. Summarize the event/ its effects/its significance, post a link where we can find more information (or from where you received your info), and pose a question.

You cannot post the same article as one already listed here.

Extra consideration will be given to students that converse with others, i.e., actually answer the questions posed. Be sure to acknowledge to whom you are referring with an "@".

A current significant event is that Yemen's leader offered to step down next year. Their president Ali Abdullah Saleh basically resigned because the people wanted him to quit. He has been in power fotr over three decades and now he is resigning. I think taht if the people didn't like his decisions then yes, he should have resigned for 2012.

What is going on with the U.S. Nuclear Power Industry?

Japanese officials scramble to contain radiation leaking from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as a result of this week’s tragic earthquake and ensuing tsunami, others around the world are questioning the concern of nuclear power as a long term fix to global energy needs.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has already shuttered seven nuclear power plants and delayed a decision on extending operations at 17 plants around the country. News that safety concerns over the Mark 1 reactor design utilized at the Fukushima facility were aired more than 35 years ago has caused the public a high amount of confidence. The timing could not have been worse for a nuclear power industry that was preparing itself for growth. President Obama had asked Congress for an additional $36 billion in loan guarantees for new nuclear plant construction on top of the $18.5 billion that has already been set aside. In the U.S., nuclear power is the cause of 20 percent of all electricity generated. Globally, 62 new reactors are currently under construction with 482 being planned or proposed.

While President Obama remains a advocate for nuclear power, the Congress are sharing concerns and may consider limiting government subsidies. As safety concerns begin to take hold amongst the general public, plans for a massive expansion of nuclear power generation in the U.S. could be put on hold.

Tokyo(CNN) Tokyo's water was not safe for babies to dring due to the nucler power plant that exploded. Tokyo's gov. has maken sure that households with babies will have enough bottle of water to drink. Now that they have done research that says that the water is safe he stills wants to make sure nothing bad happens.

Standoff ends with arrest in Mission . . .

this story came from kansas city star :

Authorities spent about 7 hours in a standoff with a suspect holed up in a mission home on Thursday before officers entered the house the man was in and arrested him shortly after 10 p.m.
The suspect was obviously running and hiding from the police because he was violating probation and he had severe warrants for escape from community corrections. Authorities evacuated every one in the neighborhood that was close by the suspect to keep neighbors and others safe. Authorities arrested a second man who was in the same house because he had outstanding warrants also as the other suspect.

http://www.time.com/time/video/player/0,32068,852977893001_2061814,00.html

They are talking about how happy the people are in cyro and that the call it the New Egypt and some people are doing bad and dont have alot of money and have to have little vinders selling as much they can to get any kind of money they can get. The people there are putting up billboards saying there is alot of stuff that the people there have to do to get there home better. some people are glad that they are free and have more of a right and one citizen said it is very good beacuse that means the people there would have to work there hardest to make there homes the way the want them.

Question

What do you think of egypt being a more free country? Do you think they will accomplish in making there country the way they want?

BREAKING NEWS!!!!
Africa problems:

There have been over 9 million refugees and internally displaced people from conflicts in Africa. Hundreds and thousands of people have been slaughtered from a number of conflicts and civil wars. If this scale of destruction and fighting was in Europe, then people would be calling it World War III with the entire world rushing to report, provide aid, mediate and otherwise try to diffuse the situation.
