Visit either site on Women in Iran (PBS or MSNBC) and then read this BBC article about the execution of Atefah Sahaaleh .

Write a 2-3 paragraph reaction to what you have read.

1. What are the similarities and differences in our culture and theirs?

2. What happened to Atefah? Why?

3. How does what you read in the PBS or MSNBC articles contradict what you read about Atefah?

Read about other countries in the Middle East and their responses to women's civil rights. Compare and contrast women's rights in Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan or in Tunisia.

Two American women visits a segregated library to improve relations between the two countrie in the PBS article. In the article of the teenage girl Atefah Sahaaleh was hanged for "crimes against chastity".

The similarities and differences in our culture and theirs are that the women are treated differntly than the men are and the differences is different women form diferent countries have harsher punishments.

The state-run newspaper accused her of adultery and described her as 22 years old teenage girl is she gotten executed. Why, is that she was in the streets heavily under the control of religious authorities.

The opposite of the articles are the PBC women that they are trying to improve rules for women. In Iran rules to get start to the point of just bad rules for execution.

There is a great debate in social science about what it is that shapes us both as individuals and owe members of society. Why Mohammed after was senior AL-Qaeda molitary chief and top deputy to osama but Ladan decided to give he green light to the sept 11 plot at atef's urging after was killed in us our smile on his way there nov 11. In J.RR Tolkiers lord of the rings triology which is chrrotrans literary.

1. the similarities and differences in our culture and theirs are the following: the similarties n there country compare 2 ours are in both countries we have death penalty, some ppl n our country go by the religious laws, also the U.S has a court of appeals. the differences in our culture are the following: we dnt execute by hanging ppl,we dnt whip prisoners,we dnt have moral police, teenagers dnt get arreseted 4 going 2 a party, finally we treat our women equally.
2. What happened to Atefah? Why?
she was excuted by hanging. the reason is because of the Sharia law, which states sex outside marriage is considered a captital crime.

3. How does what you read in the PBS or MSNBC articles contradict what you read about Atefah?

they said she was married but she was a minor, also they said they go by GOD law,but GOD would not kill anybody.

the similarities between Our culture and Iranqi culture is that we both have rules and a law to follow and that their is certain things that we think is unfair but has no control over.

16 year old Atefah died from execution. only because people thought she was not following the rules of the laws. first she was accused of meesing with a man without being married to him in that country they call that Sharia law which is a major law to follow.so they considered her 22years old basically an adult. so she had got charged life sentence then executed.

just by reading all these articles its basically saying that women do not have as much freedo of speech men do. they cant control how they are getting treated by men or others.

This was about a group of women who traveled to Iran wanting to make it better. They have tried to fix things between the two. One of the things that talked about was the signs of the reasons why they want to make it better. Another reason is that they "Seem" to understand how they feel.

They showed a various of women that what it must be like. It seemed rough to me. I think it is going to work because they want to show them that we are not perfect and we are struggling as well. This is what i think.

What i have read about was on M.S.N.B.C. I watched when women were being penalized for not wearing the Hujavs. They showed when a lady was in trouble and almost sentenced to two death sentences for not waring the scarf. It also showed a woman being into alot of trouble with the law for promoting that women shouldnt have to wear the scarfs. It is diffrent from our culture because women can wear whatever they want and as long as they arent nude they can do whatever see whatever and promote whatever.

1)One diffrence is women who was hanged for commiting adultry. Also alot of people are exicuted for crimes against the islamic law.
2)She was exicuted for commiting adultry. The state-run newspaper accused her of alultery and said she was 22 years old. But she wasnt married and she was only 16.
3)That women are treated extremly diffrent from men like when men commit adultry they are not exicuted like when wemon are when they are and that the media is very corrupt.
4)Some countries are able to have alittle frodom and dont have to wear the full dress but some make them wear the full dress.

1) What are the similarities and differences in our culture and theirs? The similarities and our culture and in theirs is we both have death penalties and also have rules to follow. The differences between both cultures is we dont send the innocent victim to jail.

2) What happened to Atefah? Why? Atefah was executed at the age of 16 because she was accused her of adultery.

3) How does what you read in the PBS or MSNBC articles contradict what you read about Atefah? What I read in them to articles was referring to not have much freedom for womens.

** WOMEN IN IRAN **
Its obvious that their Religions, Way of life, Way of thinking and just about everythig is different from how we do things. Their culture is controlled by the goverment. Here in the U.S every person is to do how and what they please. We have more freedom of course. Atefah was executed due to the fact that she didnt follow the rules of the goverment. She was arrested 4 times. The first time when she was 13, she was alone with a boy. Other times she was caught out past cerfew. Also while on trial she threw off her vail and yelled at the judge. I believe thats the main reason why she was executed. I watched the MSNBC video and it completely contridicted what I read about Atefah. What I read about Atefah was scary and mean, It made the goverment seem very mean and strict. In the video it showed that the goverment was going through a changing process. In media they always try to show the U.S the nagative and not whats really going on.

Iran People !!!
1. What are the similarities and differences in our culture and theirs? We are aloud to wear what ever we wont, we dont half to cover our bodys like Iran women half to if its summer they half to wear long dresses and some over there head. They have fashion police there laws are alot differnt from ours. Down there men can do what they want and Iran women cant men can marry 2 women. Iran cant walk the streets by themseveles they half to be with there husband. If they get divorce the men gets everything even the kids.

2. What happened to Atefah? Why?
Atefah was protesting and she took off her thing around her head and they shot her for that. She was only 16 and you couldnt be killed at such a young age. But the judge he looked at her has 22 because of the way she looked. But if anything I think that judge knew she was young.

3. How does what you read in the PBS or MSNBC articles contradict what you read about Atefah? Them stories on T.v tell alot differnt then how Atefah story is.

Some similarities about women in Iraq and our culture are that we are aloud to wear anything you want to, but the women in our country don't have to cover up all their body parts, but their country is controlled by the government so if they don't obey the rule, they we be in serious trouble. Some differences are that we have the right to wear anything and we don't get beaten for it. When I read about Atefah she was only 16 years old. She was hanged in a public square in the Iranian city of Neka. Atefah was protesting and she took off her thing around her head and they shot her for that. The stories from PBS and MSNBC has a lot of differences.

the similarities in our culture and thiers is we both have rules for everybody and there is certain way people must act. the differeces are that we dont give brudal punishments like they do. we also give equal treatment for women and men.

atefah was hanged because she diss obeyed the rules of chasity when in reality she was raped and they said it did not make a difference. the man who raped her got jail time but and a few lashes. atefah got jail time and hanged because of the rules of chasity. they said they thought she was 22 but really she was only 16.

in the pbs article the women tried to go to the other country and make piece or see have they could improve relations between the two countries, but in the atefah article there talking about the hanging of atefah and what happend. they also talked about there crime rate excecution rate and sharia law.

In the MSNBC article, I read about how some American women went and visited women in Iran. Last, I read about a 16-year old girl being executed in Iran a couple of years ago. Both stories were similar since they were both told about Iran.

1.
*Similarties between U.S. culture and Iran culture:
1 both have their own sports they like/play ; 2 both eat some of the same foods; 3 both have the right to get married;

*Differences between U.S. culture and Iran Culture:
1 most americans speak english, but in Iran, iranians (people of the country) speak different languages such as persian; 2 in iran, women "have" to wear something over their head when married, but in the U.S., women "do not have to wear" anything over their head when married ; 3 in Iran, they execute people by hanging, but in the U.S. they don't execute people by hanging;

2.
Atefah was executed at the age of 16 because of being sexually involved with a men who was married which in Iran is considered a capital crime by law.

3. . . . .

Compare (Iran and Afghanistan):
1 Most women in both countries are not allowed to show their hair or face, so they have to wear something to cover up everything on their face except their eyes.

Contrast (Iran and Afghanistan):
1 In Afghanistan, most women have to wear the whole dress that covers their body and face, but in Iran, most women only wear the dress that covers everything on their face except their eyes.

2 in Iran, women are highly educated then women in Afghanistan

after seeing that video i was sooo amazed and shocked.the way i look at iran is so different now. there were many types of women doing various different things, such as fire fighters and race car drivers.there were women getting there noses done and all that.i didnt think the women in iran could do stuff like that. what i thaught about iran was totally different.
atefa is a young girl who was exacuted. she was accused of adultery and uncovering in public.since she was little she was abused and raped by older men. she had, had trouble with the law way before her exacution. in iran there is a law were no girl under 18 can be exacuted. when she was exacuted they put that she was 21.

basically atefah stood up for her rights and what she believed what was wrong and right and got shot. afghanistan women covers their faces body and hair or they can be fined for it or get whipped for it. in the u.s we speak mostly english but the same things that we have in common is that we both have many laws and if we break them we suffer.

1. Our similarities are that in our homes we do almost everything the same. The differences are that it is okay for American women to show off body parts & they are unallowed. Also mens word is accepted much more clearly and much more easily than women.

2. Atefah was hanged in the Irainian City of Neka, for crimes against chastity; or adultery.

3. It contadicted to what I read about her because, it shared some of the consequences & what women werent able to do.

In the article that I read it talked about how the people in Iran felt that their country was just the same as America.
I think that they are some what like us but then I think that they are not anything like us. I think we are smiliar because they have presidents that have some say in what they do and because America and Iran have some of the same cultures. The differences between the two is that we don't have a religious cleric that we have to answer to and women here have lots more rights than the women in Iran.
The thing that happened to Atefah was that she was executed by the government. She was executed by the government because they said that she commited adultry because the guy that raped her was married and had kids. Where she was from it was illegal for married people to have sex outside of their marriage. She was also executed because the government thought she was 22 and not her real age which was actually 16. She was still executed even thought the government said they wouldnt execute under-aged people.
What I read in the MSNBC cotrdicts with waht I read about Atefah because I think that women all over should be treated like the women are treated in America because I don't think that it is fair that the women over there can't wear what they want or do what they want.

In the first article the women stood up for what they believed in.Although many Iranian women claim they are not treated unfairly, this article states otherwise. In the video, the women in Iran were doing wonderful things. some women were firefighters, some were taxi drivers. There were also down sides, like if their clothes didn't fit certain qualifications then they could be taken away by the fashion police and could surve time in prison. The women their talked about how their treatment was fair. That is not the kind of thing I read about in the article.

Atefah Sahaaleh was a 16yr old girl who was raped and wrongfully murdered. In my opinion Atefah Sahaaleh was wrongfully exicuted, just so the male guards could show how much power they had. Although she was young, and did things that were against the Iranian law before, she didn't deserve to get murderd. She had been through so much with her family, and the jail time she had to serve, not to mention she was raped by one of the guards from the prison. She didn't deserve to be murdered, and that didn't seem like fair treatment to me.

In Tunisia the women are not required to dress certain ways, and although they don't have a lot more rights than the Iranian women they still have more.

There is some similarites in the two countries. Long ago women did not have equal rights as men. Just like the teenagers in iraq were marching for rights just like Martin Luther King, and any other civil rights leader.

Atefah Sahaaleh was just like Martin Luther King. She was standing up for women rights. She believed that the rules and culture for women and girls are stupid. She was killed because during the march of freedom, or change she was shot. She came from a long line of trouble with the law. She broke laws that she thought was stupid.
